Body composition adds context to training, strength and recovery. The InBody 270 measures weight and electrical impedance to estimate fat, lean tissue and body water. Tracking comparable measurements can be useful; chasing a daily score is not the goal.
This guide covers the original 270, not the 270S. Their specifications and outputs differ. InBody’s former 270 product-page URL now displays the 270S; use the 270 manual for the exact unit.
What it measures
The 270 uses eight hand/foot electrodes and 20 and 100 kHz currents to measure impedance in five segments: both arms, trunk and both legs. The analysis takes about 15 seconds, after preparation and setup.
Useful report outputs include weight, percent body fat, body fat mass, skeletal muscle mass, total body water and segmental lean estimates. These are BIA estimates, not imaging or a diagnosis. Fat-free mass is not the same as skeletal muscle mass; segmental lean values include water and other lean tissues. Estimated basal metabolic rate is not measured metabolism or a calorie prescription. Do not assume the original 270 provides the phase-angle or fluid-analysis outputs of other models.
Forms and suitability
- Before measurement: body-composition consent, relevant health/device-suitability information and privacy/optional result-sharing authorization. These service-specific documents still need completion; the adult lactate packet is not a substitute.
- If exercise testing is included: official PAR-Q+ (current version) when requested, and physician follow-up only if indicated. Follow the complete pathway and confirm publisher permissions; screening is not medical clearance or confirmation of BIA suitability.
See onboarding for private return arrangements and the forms library for available review drafts. Adult paperwork does not cover minors.
The manual prohibits testing people with implanted medical devices such as pacemakers or essential support devices. Metal implants can distort results. Discuss pregnancy, mobility limitations or uncertainty with the appropriate clinician/manufacturer before testing. Do not improvise around device restrictions. The specified weight range is 10–250 kg; safe standing and correct electrode contact are also necessary.
Tracking is optional. Skip it if it encourages anxiety, restrictive eating or compulsive checking. Strength, energy, training consistency and wellbeing may be better progress measures.
Prepare and measure
- Standardize conditions. Use the same device and similar time of day, clothing and routine. The 270 manual calls for standing upright for about five minutes, using the bathroom first, and waiting at least two hours after a meal. Measure before exercise, not immediately after training. Follow individual medical needs rather than delaying necessary food or medication.
- Keep normal hydration. Do not dehydrate or overdrink to alter results. Note unusual fluid intake, illness or other changes that affect comparability.
- Check setup and identity. The operator checks the level, stable platform and correct units, height and client ID. Use a consistent ID for saved histories; guest-mode results may not be retained. Confirm the intended person before saving or sharing.
- Follow the contact/posture diagram. Remove shoes and socks, prepare palms and soles with the specified InBody Tissue, and place bare feet on the electrodes. Grip both handles with thumb/finger contact as instructed. Keep arms straight and away from the torso, thighs apart, and remain still. Nobody should touch the person during measurement.
- Save and review. Verify completion and the correct record, then return the handles and step down safely. Clean the equipment according to the manual between users; never pour or spray liquid into it.
The operator follows the supplied manual for setup, quality checks, cleaning and troubleshooting. A failed reading calls for checking contact, posture and equipment, not repeated tests until a preferred number appears.
Track a small set of useful metrics
Keep weight, percent body fat, fat mass and skeletal muscle mass alongside date/time, device, ID and preparation notes. Agree a review interval suited to the goal rather than requiring daily measurements. Compare sustained patterns with strength, recovery and training performance.
A fictional example: a lower fat estimate after a hot workout is not evidence of immediate fat loss. Mark that reading as taken under different conditions rather than comparing it directly with a rested baseline. A one-percentage-point change is not automatically real tissue change.
Start a new baseline when changing from another device. Do not splice home-scale, DXA and InBody readings into one interchangeable series, or apply a fixed correction factor.
Save results and share selectively
- Device history: the 270 manual describes storage for up to 100,000 results when member IDs are used, printed result sheets and USB export/backup. Protect exports and backups as private client records.
- LookinBody Web and InBody App: compatible setup can provide cloud histories and client access. Correct profile/account matching matters. Features, connection support and subscription terms must be confirmed for the actual 270 and region; a free app-sync tier is not the full coach-management portal. Cloud sharing requires agreed privacy arrangements, not just turning on Wi-Fi.
- TrainingPeaks: direct InBody 270-to-TrainingPeaks metric sync has not been verified. With consent, share a selected report through workout attachments or an agreed private channel. An attachment is not automatic metric import. Keep the full intake packet and unrelated health data out of routine training uploads.
These are supported workflow options, not a claim that accounts or integrations have been connected for this service.
What the research supports
Model-specific findings are mixed. Czartoryski and colleagues (2020) found no statistically significant differences in group body-composition means between the 270 and DXA in 47 exercise-trained adults. Garcia and colleagues (2020), studying 88 adults, found that the 270 underestimated fat mass and percent body fat and overestimated fat-free mass relative to DXA.
Similar group averages do not guarantee accuracy for an individual. Neither comparison establishes that every small change over time reflects tissue change. Repeatability, agreement with a reference method and sensitivity to change are separate questions.
Water-ingestion research using an InBody 770 also illustrates why preparation matters, but it is not a validation of the 270. Use these findings to standardize and interpret cautiously, not to restrict fluids or promise DXA-equivalent accuracy.
Where it fits the service
Performance Assessment includes optional InBody 270 body-composition analysis where suitable, with results discussed alongside your training goals. You can decline the measurement. Scope, availability and follow-up tracking are agreed before booking; repeat assessments are not automatically included in ongoing coaching.
